Browse the guidesThere is no single best brand. Look for food labelled "complete and balanced", with a named animal protein listed first, and a formula that matches your cat's age. Indoor cats burn less energy, so watch portion sizes. Adding some wet food also helps them stay hydrated in our hot weather.
Kittens are commonly dewormed every two weeks until about eight weeks old, then monthly until six months, and every three months as adults. Cats that go outdoors or hunt may need it more often. Your vet will set the right schedule and product for your cat's weight.
Homemade cat food can be safe if it is nutritionally balanced, but it is hard to meet a cat's exact needs without expert guidance. Most commercial brands in Malaysia are fortified with taurine and vitamins. If you want to try homemade recipes, consult a vet first to avoid deficiencies.
Start with a litter box and litter, food and water bowls (a water fountain helps in the heat), a sturdy carrier for vet visits, a scratching post, a brush, and a few toys for daily play. Add flea and tick prevention as advised by your vet.
Brush your cat a few times a week, more often for long-haired breeds. A good diet and fresh water keep the coat healthy. Wash bedding regularly and use a lint roller or vacuum with a pet attachment. Sudden heavy shedding or bald patches are worth a vet check.
Call a few clinics near you and ask for their vaccination package prices — they can differ a lot. University veterinary hospitals, the SPCA and local animal welfare groups sometimes run lower-cost vaccination and neutering programmes. Keep your cat's vaccination card for every visit.
